Joliet City Council Approves Massive Data Center Project Amid Community Concerns

The Joliet City Council has approved plans for the Joliet Technology Center, a 795-acre data center campus that is set to become the largest in Illinois. The decision, made on March 19, 2026, followed extensive public hearings and discussions.

Project Overview

The proposed data center will be located near the intersection of Rowell and Bernhard Roads, adjacent to the Chicagoland Speedway. The development is expected to generate significant economic benefits, including substantial property tax revenue over the next 30 years and the creation of numerous construction and full-time jobs. Developers anticipate the facility will be operational by 2030.

Community Response

The approval process was marked by extensive public engagement. A public hearing on March 16 lasted over six hours, with many residents expressing concerns about the project’s potential impact on local resources, including water and energy consumption, as well as environmental considerations. Some community members also raised questions about the transparency of the approval process and the project’s proximity to residential areas.

Council Decision

Despite the concerns, the City Council voted 8-1 in favor of the project. Councilwoman Suzanna Ibarra was the sole dissenting vote, citing the need for greater transparency and community involvement in the decision-making process. City Manager Beth Beatty stated, “This annexation agreement sets clear expectations for infrastructure, services, and community benefits while helping ensure the project moves forward in a responsible way.”

Next Steps

With the council’s approval, developers are expected to move into the planning phase ahead of a targeted construction start in early 2027. The project is anticipated to position Joliet as a significant hub for data center operations, aligning with the growing demand for such facilities driven by advancements in artificial intelligence and cloud computing.

As the project progresses, ongoing dialogue between city officials, developers, and residents will be crucial to address community concerns and ensure the development aligns with Joliet’s long-term goals and sustainability efforts.
